A Natural Companion to Resilience
Last week we talked about resilience.
About how real strength isn’t just found in effort or intensity—but in the quiet, gritty, sometimes-wobbly decision to keep showing up. To return to the floor. To keep casting votes for who you want to be, even when life throws a curveball (or a kettlebell) your way.
Today, I want to add another layer to that story.
Not just what we do when life knocks us down,
but what we choose to do before it does.
That’s where this value comes in:
Choose Growth Over Comfort.
The cousin of resilience
If resilience is the comeback…
Choosing growth is the pre-game warm-up.
It’s what we practice when things are relatively okay, so that when they’re not—we don’t fall apart.
It’s that tiny whisper in your head that says:
“This is hard… but I think I can try.”
And then you do.
Even if you feel unsure. Even if it means being a beginner again. Even if your ego has to take a deep breath and sit this one out.
It shows up in sneaky ways
Growth doesn’t always look like a bold leap.
Sometimes it looks like a quiet choice.
- Saying “yes” to coaching when your brain says “I’m fine”
- Scaling up when your legs say “no thanks” but your goals say “let’s go”
- Signing up for a specialty course even though you’re not sure you belong
- Starting over with a new habit you’ve let slip
- Staying for mobility when you’d rather leave early
You’ve probably done one of these already this week.
That’s growth. And it rarely feels glamorous.
Why we’re naming it now
We’re naming this value—Choose Growth Over Comfort—because we want to see it, practice it, and celebrate it more.
Not just as coaches.
Not just as athletes.
But as people.
It reminds us that we don’t just show up to get fit—we show up to get better at doing hard things. And to do them on purpose.
It’s a challenge, yes. But it’s also a relief.
Because it means we don’t have to wait until something breaks to start growing.
We can grow now.
By choice.
Growth might look like…
- A humbling rep scheme that forces you to slow down
- A coaching cue that challenges your form or your mindset
- A hard conversation you’ve been avoiding
- A decision to care for yourself when it’d be easier not to
Growth is personal.
It’s not always loud.
But it’s always there—for the choosing.
One last thought
When we choose growth—especially when no one’s watching—we build the muscles of who we’re becoming.
And the more we practice that, the more resilient we get.
Not just in the gym. In life.
So yeah—this one’s connected.
Resilience is the comeback.
Growth is the training montage you didn’t skip.
You don’t need to be perfect.
You don’t need to get it right the first time.
You just need to lean in—even a little—and choose the thing that stretches you.
We’ll be here when you do.
