Motivation means desire. Motivation means you have a compelling vision for something.
The science of motivation is the science of success.
Here’s what we know about motivation:
Success has to happen to some degree before you’ll become motivated
Success has to keep happening.
We don’t always recognize success when it happens. We’re pretty hard on ourselves.
Our brain will immediately begin developing thought patterns around negativity, however, it takes roughly thirty-seconds of concentrating on something positive for a healthy thought groove to be established.
That’s why it’s important to focus in on what we are doing well, what progress we’ve made, and the ways we’re moving towards new accomplishments.
The practice of thankfulness doesn’t come naturally to anyone. That’s why we call it a practice. It trains us to see the good, the beautiful and the joy in our day-to-day life. It can be hard, and often we don’t feel like doing it, but once we have, we feel better. Practicing gratitude and thankfulness is an exercise.
That’s why it is important to actively seek the good, the praiseworthy and the growth in our life. As we practice gratitude more, it’ll become more natural, and perhaps even habitual, to see the good and to look for things to be thankful for.
“Bright Spots Friday” is our practice of thankfulness. Every week in our CrossFit Northland Athlete Info group, we’ll post our “Bright Spots”.
What is a bright spot? A bright spot is anything that went well, things we’re celebrating in our lives, our personal podium moments and the little ‘wins’ from the week. Bright spots don’t have to be workout-related at all. As a community, we want to celebrate and affirm what is going on in the lives of one another.
The first time, we might be reluctant to post our Bright Spots. “I don’t really know these people THAT well…they don’t want to hear about my life.” Or “I don’t want to share all my personal stuff…”, or “my little achievement isn’t that great compared to the achievements of others’ in the gym”. While these are valid reasons for not posting, we want to invite you to have the courage to post anyway. Here’s why: we’re genuinely interested and invested in your progress, health and growth. If it is something that involves a celebration in your life, we want to celebrate with you. Posts will not be shared on our blog, or made known to the general public, and will be kept safe in our group.
So I’ll go first. And I encourage you to follow with one TINY little Bright Spot. Make it workout-related to start, if that’s easier. What did you do well, or do the best, or do for the first time this week?
My bright spots for the week:
-I beat my previous score on the workout “Bells of Glory” and pushed myself harder than I typically do.
-Even though I got the exact same score on Monday’s workout, my handstand push-up’s (something I’ve been working on) went much better than when I tested them week six weeks ago.
– My wife and I got our new car titled and registered (and did so before the temporary tags expired-which is a huge win for me!).
We’re all friends and family here. It’s a safe place. Look within, seek the good and start your weekend happy.
