How did your journey with CrossFit Northland began? How long have you been a member of CrossFit Northland? What brought you into CFN?

I began Crossfit Northland in May 2013. A good friend of mine, Cody Kremer, had join previously and was looking oh-so-fit and I had to know what he was doing. He asked me to join him in a class and the rest is history. I had previously been going to Title Boxing for two years and needed a change. To this day, I thank Cody for inviting to that first class because it was the best decision I ever made.

Tell us about your fitness/health background? (Have you always been active? Played sports growing up? Tried other gym settings? Worked out at home?)

I have always been very active in athletics growing up, from basketball and volleyball at a very young age to softball and track in high school. After high school, it was really hard to find something that I enjoyed as much as team sports. There is just something about going to a neighborhood gym that just isn’t the same as being in a Crossfit class. The support and drive you get from the workout, coaches, and other members is a powerful motivator.

What kinds of things can you do now, that you were not able to do when you first started CrossFit? (inside or outside of the gym)

I always considered myself fit, but I truly didn’t realize how strong I could become until I was introduced to weightlifting. I always remember a class with Coach Manny when he told me during a deadlift exercise, “Wow George! Your form is SO much better!” I have to laugh because I guess my previous form was pretty bad. I still remember the day I got my first set of double-unders and that overwhelming feeling of satisfaction that I was finally able to achieve that goal!

What is kind of workout is totally your jam?

Even after seven years, the workouts never ceases to surprise me. Just when I think I know what to expect or I know what’s coming, I’m proven wrong. My favorite type of workouts are usually ones that involve a lifting movement mixed with some sort of body weight movement. I enjoy the alternating challenge of a barbell movement and the cardio of a body weight movement.

In your opinion, what is the most valuable aspect of Crossfit Northland?

The most valuable lesson I’ve learned from Crossfit Northland is the power of a healthy lifestyle combining diet and activity. In the last three years, I have gained a deeper appreciation for my health and wellness, and I will carry this attitude with me for the rest of my life.

What would you tell someone that is considering joining a CrossFit gym?

If someone was considering joining a Crossfit gym, I would tell them to do it and to not hesitate! They shouldn’t be discouraged if movements don’t come to them quickly or if weight seems too heavy. Crossfit does not come easy, and it takes a lot of time, patience, and practice. I have met the most incredible people at this gym. Crossfit Northland makes me want to be more accountable and consistent with my fitness and never miss a day, and if that doesn’t say something about the quality of this community and gym, I don’t know what does.
